Conservation

Glass Replacement (choice of standard or museum quality glass): Includes archival resealing within the price.

Archival Plate Sealing: Debris gently cleared with air and who daguerreotype package painstakingly resealed with Filmoplate P90 archival tape to ensure you precious images stay safe for future generations.

Plate Restoration: We are able to carry out traditional chemical cleanings but highly recommend and prefer to use the latest electro-platinum wand method which is revealing itself to being one of the least invasive processes. Plate cleaning should not be undertaken lightly though (there are always risks) and should only be used when tarnish or other grime has an overly detrimental effect by concealing the image. In most cases, a distilled water bath and new glass will do wonders for a daguerreotype. When cleaning is felt warranted, we carry out a sympathetic process and try to take the bare minimum of tarnish off the plate to reveal its full beauty but maintain a natural look.

Case Restoration: We can bring your leather cases back to life using a n umber of traditional techniques. From re-hinging to scuff repair and re-moisturizing of the case with leather food to ensure your case stays subtle and survives another 100 years.

Types Of Tarnish/Defects and Cleaning Success Rates:

Here are some tips when looking to buy an image with tarnish etc. or deciding to have a plate cleaned. There are different types of tarnish and defects, some will come off readily with conservation and others are permanent that cannot be remedied.

Green Corrosion: Nothing gets this off and is the worst thing possible for a dag – I rarely buy such dags.

Mould Spiders: These are permanent and won’t come off

Black Dot Measles: Permanent and won’t come off

Blue Tarnish: Pretty much a 100% success rate in removing

Green Tarnish: Again pretty much a 100% success rate in removing
Brown Tarnish: Circa 60% success rate in removing completely – 90% success in reducing
White Hazing: Depends which type it is and you cannot tell which it is until you begin cleaning.

About 40% of the time it is the so called good haze which comes off so easily, just a bath in distilled water gets it off. If

distilled water fails, it is unlikely that a full clean will completely remove it. About 60% of the time you can
slightly improve the bad white tarnish though. The bad white haze is often found on dags with a lot of
moisture under the glass.

Four Cleaning Methods Pros & Cons:

Traditional Chemical: Cyanide or Thiourea. Retains original tones well but is harsh on the plate surface and can
lead to quick re-tarnishing or hazing.

Galvanic: Tin foil, water and detergent. Can also be quite harsh on the plate’s surface.
Electro: Ammonia, water and a solid silver or platinum wand connected to an electrical current and the dag.

My preferred method which is kinder to the plate’s micro-structure and highly controllable by putting the
wand over the area that needs the most attention while leaving the peripheries less effected. Can sometimes
reduce the gold tonality slightly.

Laser: The fourth way is considered by researchers as the best method for cleaning daguerreotypes but is
costly and not available readily available. Thus far, this method is only carried out by large research institutions
with access to costly clinical equipment.

Conservation Service Terms & Conditions:
Given the complex nature of restoration work and potential unknown chemical reactions of some plates, our
insurance company does not cover the workmanship involved in cleaning. The risk of plate clouding following
cleaning is very small but it is it is understood that it is undertaken at the risk of the owner. We do take every
precaution however and handle each image like it was an original plate by Daguerre himself. Theft and
accidental damage is covered up to £1,000 while in our hands.

Return Shipping: We pack all our items exceptionally well and offer a range of services from Royal Mail Fully
Tracked and Signed For right through to couriers. Shipping insurance is provided free of charge up to £50 ($75)
– additional insurance above this will be quoted. For packages in the UK, a Special Delivery service will be used
costing £9.50 for 1 up to 5 daguerreotype sized images. Internationally, packages will be sent via a Royal Mail
Tracked & Singed for service costing £19.75 for 1 up to 5 daguerreotype sized images.
